These words are both verbs with the same general meaning: LAY means “to put in the horizontal position / a position of rest” and LIE means “to be in the horizontal position / a position of rest”. But they’re used differently, and they’re sure as hell conjugated differently.

I think it’s become a staple in America that “Do you mind if…” questions are answered with “Yes” when the answerer really means “No”.
